There is a massive misconception in the small business world that stepping away from your desk means you are taking your foot off the gas. We tell ourselves that to be successful, we have to be constantly “on” grinding through the to-do list, answering every email instantly, and permanently existing in the weeds of our own operations.
But here is the truth I saw firsthand at last week’s business retreat: You cannot see the big picture when you are trapped inside the frame.

Last week, I took a group of incredible business founders away from their daily routines for a dedicated strategy retreat. There were no immediate client fires to put out. There was no laundry staring at them from the corner of the room. It was just focused time, expert guidance, and the kind of deep, uninterrupted space that most founders haven’t experienced since they started their companies.
What happened when they finally stepped away? The needle actually moved.

The ROI of Stepping Away
When you are exhausted and overwhelmed, your business stops growing. You end up sustaining broken processes because you simply do not have the cognitive bandwidth to fix them.
A retreat isn’t just about cozy fire pits, great food, and laughing until you cry (although we had plenty of that!). It is a strategic intervention. It is a circuit breaker for burnout.
Within just a few days, the shifts in the room were profound:
- From Hiding to Executing: One founder arrived completely stuck, hiding from a major webinar launch because the tech and the strategy felt too overwhelming. By the time she left, she had a clear, actionable plan and the confidence to finally execute it.
- Demystifying the Data: Another founder, a brilliant venue host, sat down with me to finally demystify her Google Analytics and Search Console. What felt like an impossible tech hurdle in the chaos of her normal week became clear and manageable when she had the quiet space to actually focus on it.
- Emotional Unblocking: For others, the value was simply being in a room with people who get it. Running a business is lonely. Sharing the mental load, having your ideas validated, and realising you aren’t the only one struggling with “imposter syndrome” or people-pleasing is enough to completely change your trajectory.

Why “Working Harder” Isn’t the Answer.
If your business feels stagnant, the answer is rarely to just “work harder.” The answer is usually to work differently.
You need the space to take a breath, look at your operations from a 10,000-foot view, and ask the hard questions: What am I doing that I don’t need to be doing? Where is my actual genius zone? What is the one thing I need to focus on next?
You cannot answer those questions while you are simultaneously trying to run payroll, answer customer queries, and keep the lights on.

The Next Opportunity: Time & Space in Morocco (November)
The feedback from last week was overwhelming. The participants left with clarity, renewed energy, and actual, tangible business assets ready to utilise. They didn’t lose a week of work; they gained months of accelerated growth.
If you are reading this and realizing that you are currently trapped inside your own business frame, it is time to step out.
The next opportunity to step away is Time and Space Morocco — 4th-7th November 2026. Four days in a private Moroccan palace with expert facilitation, zero PowerPoint slides, and 23 other founders who genuinely get it.
You won’t lose a week of work. You’ll gain months of clarity.
You don’t need to work harder. You just need the time and space to think clearly.
