What is the creator economy?

I guess this is where we should start this blog as our usual readers would normally fall into the small business owner camp rather than the creator economy camp..

Forbes has the definition written down as this..

The definition of the creator economy, also called the passion economy, is the class of businesses centred around independent content creators, curators, and community builders including social media influencers, bloggers, and videographers, plus the software and finance tools designed to help them with growth and monetisation.

And what that breaks down to on a grass roots level is creators creating content for the world to enjoy who are getting paid large amounts in non traditional ways.

Creator economy examples.

Examples of this could be a monetised YouTube channel, Patreon, Buy me a Coffee and yes, this one is huge... Only Fans. If you’ve not heard of Only Fans where were you during the lockdowns?! It's not just for the market it's become very famous for... ????

Our Yellow Tuxedo YouTube channel | digital visibility

It can then build into some other new favourites… Merchandise, dropshipping and white labelling… Peter McKinnon is a huge YouTuber with 5.5 Million subscribers and over 400 million views. Coffee features A LOT in his videos! And funnily enough he also sells his own white labelled coffee!

Fact. Some huge A-List celebrities have made more money from their white labelled alcohol ranges than they have by doing what they became famous for!

What’s the opportunity for the small business owner?

You may be thinking that it's for the young people only [like our Joseph in the image] and it’s fair to say most small businesses are a million miles away from the dizzy viewing heights and subscriber figures of Peter McKinnon or Mr Beast [we love a bit of Mr beast]. But then, we don’t need those figures to achieve business changing results for ourselves. What we all do need to do though is start…

That’s what these businesses did…

Ricky from Bournemouth Jet Washing who has 52.4k subscribers on YouTube alone sharing videos of jet washing patios! [52.4k subs probably makes him a nice income on top of his day work just from the monetisation of his channel!]

Then, there is Balloon Market from Totton, Southampton who have 23.9k followers on TikTok, 39k Subscribers on YouTube and 7.7k followers on Instagram.

Ballon Market has enough YouTube Subscribers and TikTok followers to monetise those accounts and that doesn’t factor in any other revenue streams that they could have on those platforms like sponsorship [Patreon, Buy Me A coffee or YouTube], affiliate links [Amazon], drop shipping [merchandise], white labelling [coffee or other produce] and just good ‘old’ influencer marketing.

The Digital Circus | Yellow Tuxedo | digital visibility

Once again.. What does this mean for the small business owners out there?

Well, it’s simple.. You have to market your business some how and we’re huge on growing your online presence and digital visibility as we discussed in our blog "How much do business spend on marketing?"

But, what we don’t always talk about is the huge revenue opportunities for you by starting down the creator route!

What we do always encourage for all of clients, is to embrace making optimised content that they can reuse and repurpose far and wide across as many platforms as possible..

What this means is, if you OPEN THAT DOOR [thanks Trevor Young on The Yellow Magic Hour], there is a world of opportunity and growth for your business. Not just through the initial marketing for what you do for your day job that comes from creating, but also the revenue streams it can open up for you.

~

The Digital Circus LIVE is coming on 18th May and we’re so keen on the opportunity for small businesses within the Creator Economy, that it will be featured throughout the day… The tag line for The Digital Circus LIVE is ‘a celebration of digital visibility, business growth and opportunity”.

If you’d like to join us for The Digital Circus LIVE celebration on the 18th May 2021, then do join our Yellow Tuxedo mailing list to find out first what’s going on and how you could be involved. ????????

~

Thank you as always for reading and if you have any thoughts on the creator economy and the opportunity it presents for the small business owner, then I'd love to hear from you.. Do always feel free to get in touch or drop us a DM on your favourite social platform..

Have fun always and thank you.

What is the difference between digital marketing and digital visibility...

We sometimes get asked if at Yellow Tuxedo, we’re digital marketing managers and although we understand why we get asked that, we’re not! We’re actually digital visibility specialists!

You may be saying, that’s a bit tenuous and yes, I can see why. However, it’s a subtle but very important difference..

Our Yellow Tuxedo YouTube channel | digital visibility

Firstly, lets check some definitions in the dictionary...

digital | ˈdɪdʒɪt(ə)l |

adjective

1 (of signals or data) expressed as series of the digits 0 and 1, typically represented by values of a physical quantity such as voltage or magnetic polarisation. Often contrasted with analogue.

relating to, using, or storing data or information in the form of digital signals: digital TV | a digital recording.

involving or relating to the use of computer technology: the digital revolution.

marketing | ˈmɑːkɪtɪŋ |

noun [mass noun]

the action or business of promoting and selling products or services, including market research and advertising.

visibility | vɪzɪˈbɪlɪti |

noun [mass noun]

the state of being able to see or be seen: a reduction in police presence and visibility on the streets.

Digital Marketing...

As you can see. Digital marketing is essentially the act of promoting yourself, business or services online, and you can say it’s a more targeted approach, like a funnel and usually has a finite approach to it.

Digital Visibility then...

Where as digital visibility is about being seen / visible online and the brand and business growth that comes with that visibility. And, that is what we’re all about and why we use the Flywheel model of marketing… Yes, you could say the digital visibility is ultimately marketing and on that we wouldn’t disagree.

The Digital Circus | Yellow Tuxedo | digital visibility

And then...

If you desire a full targeted approach to your marketing online that is switched on and then switched off once your time with that company is over, then please do find a digital marketeer for yourself as they’ll be able to do that for you.

If you wish to grow your brands digital visibility in a more flywheel approach that has the ability of exponential growth, will work for you due to the optimisation of content and all of the excitement and trappings that come with that, then please do get in touch, as that’s exactly what we show you how to do..

Thank you..

As always, thank you so much for reading. We'd love to hear any thoughts you have, so do feel free to get in touch via our favourite platform. Instagram. We're @Yellow_Tuxedo, do feel free to send a message..

Thank you and have fun always.

Alan

Really, why is video important for business!

In this blog I’m going to share some of the more practical reasons with you on why is video important for business and that you almost have to be making video in 2021!

If you read our other blog all about what we did for marketing in 2020 [How much do businesses spend on marketing], you’ll understand that video played a huge part in our marketing strategy and has massively helped propel our business forward. And, now I’m going to share the practical way in which the video content helped us, other than just sharing it on our social platforms.

In this blog post...

There are two main ways as a business that you should be creating video content

  1. The type of video that is helpful or entertaining, more curated in nature and would naturally sit on YouTube or in a blog post.
  2. Going LIVE.

Both types of video are hugely beneficial for you and interestingly, going LIVE can also sit in the same place as point 1 above if you wish it to.

However in this blog I’m specifically looking at point 1 above and will cover point 2, going LIVE another day . [will link to it, when done].

Our Yellow Tuxedo YouTube channel

What making video content does for you, your business and your brand.

Simply put, if you create video content, it allows your audience, community, potential clients, followers, likers, subscribers and people who are just discovering you to start their know, like and trust journey into you and your brand without you actually needing to talk to them directly in the first instance.

Think of it like this, before you walk into your chosen supermarket, you already know how you feel about them because of all of the adverts you watch on the TV!

You’re creating your own ‘adverts’ that aren’t going to be on TV, they’re actually going to be somewhere better… The internet!

How that non TV approach works practically…

Here are some images… The caveat here, as with all content is that you HAVE to do your keyword research and optimise the content with the keywords, otherwise this doesn’t work.. This is also something we teach to our clients and The Digital Circus members.

Why is video important for business
Google main page results for keyword 'streamyard for podcast'
Why is video important for business

Why is video important for business? | Yellow Tuxedo on Google
Google image results for keyword 'streamyard for podcast'

What you’re seeing here is 'page 1' of Google for the main search, video & images. As you can see we appear six times for our chosen video & the keyword used across those three 1st pages. You also see that our strong and consistent branding helps a lot to catch the viewers eye.

I’ve shown you the main search results, videos & images as people do like to shop in different ways and we need to accommodate for that. We actually rank higher than Streamyard the company on the main results page on Google!

We’re also here.. Number 1 on YouTube for our chosen keyword..

Why video is important for business | Yellow Tuxedo YouTube

The adventure continues...

What we’re doing here, is creating content that is helpful, adds value, answers questions and grows our brand authority. It also allows potential clients into our eco-system at a point that is convenient to them! This is all part of the Flywheel Model of marketing..

The Digital Circus | Yellow Tuxedo

What else?

We’re also doing something else we like to do, which is ‘embrace the grey, as that’s where the true growth and excitement comes from’. The particular video used as an example in this blog has not only had people watching our content, visiting our website and becoming clients and brand ambassadors, but it  has us chatting with people around the world and also has had us appear as guests on podcasts from around the world. All growing our brand and all because we recorded one video!

*NOTE… There’s a huge part missing in this blog, we haven’t even covered using this video across your social platforms!!! How often you can share it, where to share it and how many more times you can reuse and repurpose it…

Final thoughts

So, our one video has created 7 ‘virtual doors’ to our business across these two platforms. Actually, it’s created more as it does rank on page one for both Google and YouTube for other similar keywords as well. This doesn't include where else we've used this video and keyword of course!

Why is video so important to your business? Well, hopefully this blog has answered that for you and you really need to get going with it. Create that content, optimise it and get sharing…

Ok, these are really my final thoughts…

We get there’s a lot more to it than just picking up the camera. There’s what to talk about, keyword research, camera confidence and then actually how to do it! So, we thought we'd help answer all of these as well..

Hopefully the following will all help..

What to talk about… You always always start with answering the questions your clients are already asking, as I bet your bottom dollar others are typing those same questions into Google.

For keyword research, you can start here..

Camera confidence tips from the fabulous Chris Mooney off of CM Learning.

This video will help you get started with filming on your smart phone…

Thank you for reading today. I'd love to hear any thoughts you have on creating videos for you and your business! Do feel free to just drop me an email on [email protected] or find us on one of our social platforms and engage away with us!

Have fun always..

Alan

How to be more social on social media is something we talk to our clients about all of the time. We're always going on about remembering to #BeSocial, when out there on the socials.

In this blog, I thought I’d take the time to explain exactly what #BeSocial actually means to you as a business or brand and I’m going to break it down into three sections.

  1. When you’ve posted on social media
  2. When you’re not posting on social media
  3. How do you market your business?

And then a cheeky summary at the end..

~

  1. When you’ve posted on social media

We’re constantly surprised by businesses on social media, who post out content across their platforms and seemingly don’t reply to any of the comments!

Let me write that in a different way… If your business was a shop or had a physical premises and someone walked in through the door, would you ignore them or would you say ‘Hi’ and chat to them?

We also find a lot of  businesses saying, social media doesn’t work for us and I don’t know why I post to it! We then have a look and find that they’re not even engaging with anyone who actually leaves a comment on their posts!

So, section 1 breaks down to this advice..

When you post to social media reply to every single comment.

  1. When you’re not posting on social media

What about when you’ve not posted on social media and you have no comments to reply to or no conversation to keep engaging with?!

This one is also simple and a natural extension of point 1 above..

Essentially, get that conversation started… You can do some or all of the following..

Our Yellow Tuxedo YouTube channel
  1. How do you market your business?

In a previous blog post, we shared what we spent on marketing throughout 2020 and what we did do for our marketing and what actually worked for us. Yes, every business is different. However It’s well worth a read if you’re trying to work out your own marketing plan and you're not quite sure where to focus your efforts.

It does also beg the question, “How do you actually market your business?”. It’s a crazy question when you think about it. It’s so very open ended and has a gazillion ways to answer it that could be different for every single person and business. Most experts would also give you different thoughts, ideas and feedback as there are so many ways to actually market your business.

We have a very simple take on this. Whilst you may be wondering on the bigger question of how to market your business, today there are some very simple and easy things you can do right now to help grow your business and brand online.

Yes, that's right, hopefully you’ve guessed it? Pick up your phone, get on the socials, chat, engage and #BeSocial to ultimately grow online and get people noticing who you are and what you do.

To help, here are some things you can do right now!

Go and follow some new and relevant accounts [ie not Kylie Jenner or the Rock this time] and say hi to them in the DM with a voice message, tell them what you loved about their account or even just send a DM to your most recent followers saying thank you for following and that you like their content.

Go and watch a video on YouTube. Subscribe to the account, leave a comment & a thumbs up and share that bad boy out on your platforms for others to enjoy.

Go and scroll through LinkedIn, leave some comments, connect with some new contacts and send a message saying hi.

Go on Pinterest, search and then save those pins to one of your boards.

Go on Twitter and and get involved in the conversation. What # is trending right now?

The Digital Circus | Yellow Tuxedo

How to be more social on social media breaks down like this...

You may be wondering what social media is doing for you!

Well, you’re base minimum requirement when going on social media is this…

Like, comment, subscribe, follow, connect, comment and share… And, if you’re not doing anything right now, go and do exactly these things. If you read a post, the minimum you should do, rather than scrolling on is to 'like' it.

In a recent post by Trevor Young on social media lurkers. It’s suggested that 90% of people who are looking at your content don’t actually engage with it, they simply just ‘lurk’…

If you’re a lurker, then stop being one! Get out there, interact, engage and #besocial and see what happens. After all, surely you also want more people to engage with your content!

Thank you for reading today. I'd love to hear any thought you have on being more social on social media! If you do have any, then please do just drop me an email on [email protected] or find us on one of our social platforms and engage with us! 🙂

Have fun always.

Alan

PS… I’ve not even touched on ‘going live’ or creating content here.. 🙂 I'll save that for another day!

Are you wondering how much do businesses spend on marketing? Well, here's what we spent in 2020 to help you out.

If you’re wondering how much businesses spend on marketing, well, we thought we’d share our actual 2020 spend with you. We think that you may be a bit surprised..

At Yellow Tuxedo we’re HUGE on organic growth and it’s for that reason that we thought we’d share our marketing spend with you for 2020 and a summary of the results we had from it.

We are even sharing with you what our most successful marketing tactic has been for 2020, that has no cost associated with it and accounts for approximately 80% of our sales! Read on..

Firstly, why are we doing this?

Well, we’re not doing it to be smug or to gloat, we’re doing it because we want to prove it can be done. We’re doing it because we see sayings like ‘your network is your net worth’ and ‘the moment you cut your advertising spend, your business stops’ and ‘in a crisis, double your advertising spend, don’t cut it’. Ultimately, we’re doing it because we want to share with you and hopefully empower, motivate and inspire you to start growing your business in a way that works for you.

Secondly, to help here’s what Hubspot lists as marketing. They have 41 different types on their list.

Our Yellow Tuxedo YouTube channel

How much do businesses spend on marketing? Here’s what we spent in 2020.

Advertising - £0  [Any form of paid advert including printed, PPC & online ads]

Formal Networking - £206

General Marketing - £73.99 [ie Christmas cards.]

Total 2020 spend = £279.99

Notes:

We had a brand shoot in 2019 that has contributed to our content. Other than our main computers and smart phones, our tech spend is minimal.

What we didn’t do…

We didn’t market our business following the ‘ideal client model’, we marketed our business following the flywheel model of marketing and the Emily & Alan mass brand awareness and add value wherever possible model.

What we did do…..

We uploaded 150 videos to our Yellow Tuxedo YouTube channel. These gained us 419 subscribers and over 26,000 video views

We VLOGGED 100 days in a row throughout lockdown

We created multiple macro content projects to enable us to show up on line. These included..

6 x The Yellow Magic Hour

3 x That Light Bulb Moment

100 x 100 days of Vlogging videos

33 x How To videos

Most of these projects included an element of networking, collaboration and all were published on all platforms and as optimised ever green content to be found by potential clients forever.

We hosted 12 online coffee mornings

We hosted 3 FREE digital visibility skills sessions

We sent 44 ish newsletters

We published 65 blog posts on this very website.

We showed up on all of the following social media platforms and made sure that we followed the number one rule on social media.. #BeSocial

We also launched our membership in June - The Digital Circus.

Also…

We appeared on 6 podcasts as guests.

We appeared in 2 YouTube videos as guests.

We appeared in 4 other businesses newsletters that we know of!

And delivered 15 keynotes as guest speakers for other groups & communities [do get in touch if you'd like us to present to your group].

The Digital Circus | Yellow Tuxedo

What we learnt and what we got from it…

Well, 80% of our sales come from Instagram. Instagram is our favourite and preferred platform, so this does makes sense.

20% of our sales came from everywhere else.

We also have traffic to our website from every platform that we regularly publish to.

Instagram Notes: 100% of our clients are B2B. We have just over 1000 followers as of 28th Dec 2020

A bit like Shakespeare saying ‘The course of true love never did run smooth’, neither do where our clients come from!!

Here’s where some have come from in no particular order..

  • Referrals
  • Voice DMs
  • Met in previous business / personal friends
  • A Voice DM to someone else, who asked us to present, where the now client was visiting.
  • Formal networking

Our number one sales technique to date and the most successful business growth concept has been sending VOICE DMs to people who follow us on Instagram!! Just let that sink in as you go and check out our advertising and marketing spend again and wonder what you can do to grow your business!

Doing this has lead directly to… New clients, invites to speak, invites to podcasts, invites to YouTube videos and more.. This is us meeting new people, collaborating and continually growing our brand online.

Summary.

So, what’s your marketing plan for 2021? What are you going to do to grow your business?

Are we at capacity? No. Do we want more clients? Yes. Is there anything else we could do to grow our business? Of course… This article is just about what has worked VERY well for us in 2021 and we wanted to share it with you..

Thank you for reading and I hope that you have fun always..

Alan Braithwaite.

In our latest content series "That Light Bulb Moment" we talk to our current clients about their own light bulb moments since working with us on their own digital visibility. This week we talk to the ever fabulous Chris Mooney about his moment which revolved around creating a simple creation plan.

Who is Chris Mooney?

Chris Mooney is a growth mindset and resilience coach based in the south of England. If you are looking for a stronger mindset then Chris is your guy! Working within the corporate space CM Learning provides both live and virtual development for teams and individuals who want to build on their current resilience and mindset.

Chris has launched an incredible new YouTube channel which everybody should get in their life. It's filled with tips and advice for dealing with change and includes practical advice on how we can stop worrying, control negative thoughts and emotions, be more confident and have a word with our limiting beliefs and emotions.

Chris has been working with Yellow Tuxedo on his Digital Visibility as a member of The Digital Circus.

What was his light bulb moment?

During the video Chris explains that his digital visibility light bulb moment came from the fact that after years of slogging away at social media, creating detailed content calendars and struggling for ideas, the introduction of using macro content to create a simple content creation plan was a game changer. Watch the video to find out why!

The Digital Circus is an online membership created by us here at Yellow Tuxedo- The digital visibility specialists. Our main goal is to help small businesses to practically understand their own digital visibility, how it works in real life and how to simply implement a strategy that takes away the overwhelm and uncertainty of how they show up.

Find out more about The Digital Circus here.

Using Streamyard to record your podcast

We have recently fallen completely and utterly in love with Streamyard. Its been an absolute game changer for how we approach our macro content strategy especially with the launch of The Yellow Magic Hour, our newest 6 part multicasting series. But why love it so much is how easy it makes the process of recording Podcast content for your business too. In todays video we would love to show you exactly why you should use Streamyard to record your podcast.

Why we use Streamyard

It really was a no brainer for us when it came to using Streamyard for our content. It is so simple to use and allows us to stream to up to 10 platforms at one time with no trouble at all. The broadcast studio is absolute genius and allows us to manage our guests on the cast seamlessly along with our custom branded graphics.

For anyone who hasn't used Streamyard before we thoroughly recommend you go and check it out. Its an amazing platform to use [ an before you ask no, we're not being paid to say so!!!]

Podcasting with Streamyard

One of the joys of Streamyard is the ability to download the audio file for the recording at the click of a button. We have spoken to so many people over the last few months who have wanted to get started with podcasting but have been too worried that they haven't got the right equipment to start. Streamyard literally takes away and of that stress by making the "show" production as simple as humanly possible. In our opinion ANYONE, anyone at all, even if you are brand new to podcasting, can get started with communicating with their audience by using this method.

Be sure to click on the video link above as Alan will take you through all of the steps you need to take to get started and will show you exactly why you should use Streamyard to record your podcast.

As always we would love to know what you think so do be sure to leave us a comment and let us know what else we can help you guys with!

Have fun

Emily & Alan

We're massive advocates of a macro content strategy and think you should consider adopting it as well. So have a scan through below and learn why, the benefits and much more.

Emily & Alan from Yellow Tuxedo record some macro content

Start making macro content

We bang on about Macro Content a lot. But what actually is it?

Well, it's a piece of content, that can sit on a platform, nicely keyword optimised. Which means that it becomes 'evergreen' content that can then be found forever by potential clients who are searching on that keyword.

As they search on that content and discover it, they then get to start to know you and the consume more of your content, the eventually get to your website and become clients. It's the principal of organic traffic online.

The video above shows you what to do with that content after you've created it to really get it working for you. As always, if you fancied SUBSCRIBING to our YouTube channel, we'll love you forever.

PS. This is the stuff we show you how to do in The Digital Circus.
The Digital Circus | Yellow Tuxedo | digital visibility

Even the BBC make macro content.

Why are we sharing the BBCs Greg James do "Up Yours Corona"?

Well, the BBC are masters of Macro Content. Everything they produce is Macro Content and is all searchable on the web and their own platform iPlayer..

~

This peach is seven weeks old now, but Greg has been talking about it again this week  and it's on YouTube [above] for people to find them and discover the BBC / Greg James / Radio 1 brand..

~

Do they mind re purposing their content? Well, we all still watch Morecambe & Wise don't we!!

~

Create macro content, share it out as keyword optimised content and repurpose forever to keep your life simple and to bring potential clients into your ecosystem to become clients, just like the BBC do!
