The Creator Economy and the small business owner..

What is the creator economy?

I guess this is where we should start this blog as our usual readers would normally fall into the small business owner camp rather than the creator economy camp..

Forbes has the definition written down as this..

The definition of the creator economy, also called the passion economy, is the class of businesses centred around independent content creators, curators, and community builders including social media influencers, bloggers, and videographers, plus the software and finance tools designed to help them with growth and monetisation.

And what that breaks down to on a grass roots level is creators creating content for the world to enjoy who are getting paid large amounts in non traditional ways.

Creator economy examples.

Examples of this could be a monetised YouTube channel, Patreon, Buy me a Coffee and yes, this one is huge... Only Fans. If you’ve not heard of Only Fans where were you during the lockdowns?! It's not just for the market it's become very famous for... ????

It can then build into some other new favourites… Merchandise, dropshipping and white labelling… Peter McKinnon is a huge YouTuber with 5.5 Million subscribers and over 400 million views. Coffee features A LOT in his videos! And funnily enough he also sells his own white labelled coffee!

Fact. Some huge A-List celebrities have made more money from their white labelled alcohol ranges than they have by doing what they became famous for!

What’s the opportunity for the small business owner?

You may be thinking that it's for the young people only [like our Joseph in the image] and it’s fair to say most small businesses are a million miles away from the dizzy viewing heights and subscriber figures of Peter McKinnon or Mr Beast [we love a bit of Mr beast]. But then, we don’t need those figures to achieve business changing results for ourselves. What we all do need to do though is start…

That’s what these businesses did…

Ricky from Bournemouth Jet Washing who has 52.4k subscribers on YouTube alone sharing videos of jet washing patios! [52.4k subs probably makes him a nice income on top of his day work just from the monetisation of his channel!]

Then, there is Balloon Market from Totton, Southampton who have 23.9k followers on TikTok, 39k Subscribers on YouTube and 7.7k followers on Instagram.

Ballon Market has enough YouTube Subscribers and TikTok followers to monetise those accounts and that doesn’t factor in any other revenue streams that they could have on those platforms like sponsorship [Patreon, Buy Me A coffee or YouTube], affiliate links [Amazon], drop shipping [merchandise], white labelling [coffee or other produce] and just good ‘old’ influencer marketing.

Once again.. What does this mean for the small business owners out there?

Well, it’s simple.. You have to market your business some how and we’re huge on growing your online presence and digital visibility as we discussed in our blog "How much do business spend on marketing?"

But, what we don’t always talk about is the huge revenue opportunities for you by starting down the creator route!

What we do always encourage for all of clients, is to embrace making optimised content that they can reuse and repurpose far and wide across as many platforms as possible..

What this means is, if you OPEN THAT DOOR [thanks Trevor Young on The Yellow Magic Hour], there is a world of opportunity and growth for your business. Not just through the initial marketing for what you do for your day job that comes from creating, but also the revenue streams it can open up for you.
